What is the difference between the Blue Train and Rovos Rail?
South Africa is blessed with two luxury 5 star trains offering a fantastic 2 night experience on the Cape Town Route. The Blue Train has won the top 3 train at world travel awards a couple of times and it is operated by Luxrail, a division of Transnet freight rail. There are two types of luxury suites on the Blue train differentiating on size, bed, and bathroom configuration. The Blue train pricing is marginally cheaper than Rovos Rail and it runs a little faster on air suspension. Rovos Rail, also called the Pride of Africa is a magnificently restored Victorian luxury train traveling at a leisurly pace through Southern Africa.
Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Durban, Namibia, Tanzania, Mozambique, and Angola are some of the locations visited. Rovos offers three suite types with Pullman, Deluxe and Royal with en suite ablution facilities. The Vos family built this luxury train business over 30 years into a superb choice of short (3-4 days) , medium (9&10 days) and longer 15 day journeys. Both luxury trains are good products and often it comes down to date choice to make a decision. The Blue train mainly runs on the Cape Town route with a seasonal service to Hoedspruit to link with Kruger park Safaris and better suited if you have less time.
